THE BRA!DED GIRL #1
THE BRA!DED GIRL #1
THE BRA!DED GIRL #1 study series is a series of artworks that explore the expression of spirit through the tradition of hair braiding across cultures. This study began as a reflection of my personal practice of braiding my own hair and how I began to find it a meditative experience in my daily life. Hair braiding is believed to be a sacred act of weaving ones prayers with each strand of hair. In Africa, hair braiding is a practice of expressing ones identity regarding their status amongst their community. A member of the group may wear their braids in a particular style to display their rank amongst their tribe or village. In northwestern Tibet, there is an ancestral practice of weaving 108 braids into the hair of women as a sacred Buddhist ceremony to honor the 108 kinds of a afflictions associated with earthy desires, delusions, or sins that one must overcome to achieve enlightenment. Hair braiding is a significant ancient practice that spans across ancient civilizations, demographics, and landscapes. This series is paying homage to the practices that have interwoven cultural histories across humanity throughout time.
