PORTRA!T OF A FREEDOM F!GHTER : 1960
PORTRA!T OF A FREEDOM F!GHTER 1960 is the first part of a portrait series that is an evocative tribute to the enduring legacy of activists and artists who fought for freedom and collective liberation around the world. This painting was featured in the Brooklyn Art Museum in New York City as part of a special group art installation curated in collaboration with the lifestyle brand KITH to celebrate the visionary artists who inspired their BHM artist series. The painting draws from the archival mug shots taken after the detention of the African American students of the 1960s who courageously organized protests to advance the Civil Rights movement through non-violent demonstrations, transforming images of oppression into symbols of resilience. Rendered in striking indigo skin tones, the portrait captures the dignity and strength of those who stood united against racial injustices in the Jim Crow South. It invites viewers to reflect on the enduring power of solidarity and the sacrifices made for social change. This work serves as both a memorial and a call to action, honoring the spirit of those who fought for freedom.
