THE BRA!DED GIRL #2: FR!DA is a homage to one of Mexico’s most monumental artists, Frida Kahlo. This piece is part of an ongoing series exploring the expression of spirit through the tradition of hair braiding across cultures. This particular artwork began as a tribute following a self-directed study of Frida Kahlo’s work during my time in Mexico City. It is inspired by a series of her hand-drawn sketches titled “Sara’s Daughter,” in which Frida affectionately portrays several loose sketches of Sara, the young daughter of her housemaid. Although Frida was unable to have children of her own due to the traumatic bus accident that left her disabled, she continuously expressed her deep love for children through her relationships with the little ones in her life—especially the children of her sister. Frida shared a particularly tender relationship with her niece, Isolda Kahlo, who often appeared in her drawings and family photographs. Drawing from family archives and past works, this artwork also highlights the significance of the Tehuana—a traditional Indigenous Mexican headdress worn by women of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, long regarded as a symbol of cultural pride and identity. The piece further references Frida’s iconic self-portrait, “Diego on My Mind (Self-Portrait as Tehuana),” where she embodies the power, heritage, and revolutionary spirit that the garment represents.
